Our verdict on ReMe

ReMe is an open-source memory management system for AI agents that keeps conversations, resources, daily notes, and durable knowledge as readable Markdown files in a user-owned workspace. It is aimed at solo, small, and mid-market teams that want local or self-hosted control over semantic, episodic, user-profile, and graph memory. Access is available through a CLI, HTTP API, streamable MCP, embedded Python API, and an optional browser-based ReMe Studio for file and graph work.

Retrieval and consolidation are the product’s defining depth. BM25 search can be combined with optional embedding retrieval and wikilink expansion, while automatic conversation capture preserves source conversation records. Daily and digest layers support progressive consolidation, and the Auto Dream workflow creates and refines long-term memory nodes. Wikilink relationships add graph traversal for exploring connected knowledge rather than relying only on keyword results. Integrations listed include DeepSeek Harness, OpenClaw, QwenPaw, Claude Code, Hermes Agent, and Codex, giving teams several agent environments to connect through the available interfaces.

The trade-off is operational ownership. ReMe is presented as Apache-2.0 open-source software and centers on local or self-hosted deployment, so teams must provide and maintain the runtime instead of treating memory as a fully managed service. The browser Studio can make browsing, editing, and graph exploration more accessible, but it remains an optional workspace around the file-based system. Choose ReMe if readable files, inspectable history, progressive memory workflows, and deployment control are priorities. Teams seeking a vendor-managed experience or a broader set of listed SDK languages should consider another tool.
