Recallio review
A free, private Android backup system for users who control their own storage.

Recallio is free, self-hosted software for backing up photos and videos from Android devices to hardware controlled by the user. It suits individuals who want an alternative to cloud photo storage, with media kept on local or attached drives. The browser-based library includes albums, grid browsing, lightbox previews, favorites, search, full-resolution original viewing, and recoverable deletion through a configurable Bin retention period.
The main trade-off is platform and setup scope. Recallio runs on Ubuntu servers, NAS devices, spare computers, and similar hardware, and it supports Raspberry Pi 5-class systems. That gives Android users flexibility over where their library is stored, but it also makes the product a better fit for people comfortable managing self-hosted software than for buyers seeking a hosted service. Folder imports can map subfolders to albums, while automatic updates and status reporting help with ongoing maintenance.
Remote access is supported through Tailscale and WireGuard, extending the library beyond the local network. The product’s focus remains personal backup and browsing rather than collaborative photo management: face search, shared albums, and family sub-accounts are future-oriented features, while iOS is coming soon and Android is the currently listed mobile platform. Choose Recallio for control, original-quality viewing, and straightforward Android backup; choose another service if broad mobile coverage, family sharing, or built-in visual discovery is central to your decision.
