Our verdict on Reactional Composer

Reactional Composer is a desktop authoring tool for composers and audio directors creating interactive game music in Reactional’s proprietary Theme format. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, and supports teams from small studios to enterprise production. Users can import sessions from Ableton Live, Reaper, Cubase, Studio One or Bitwig, then shape note-level musical behavior for game runtime. Shipping interactive themes requires a separate Reactional license.

Its standout capability is adaptive musical control rather than simple loop generation. Composer can expose real-time tempo, key, scale, chord, rhythm and instrumentation changes, while interactive stingers and leitmotifs adapt to harmony. Callbacks for notes, chords, tempo and other musical events give game logic more ways to respond to music. VST3 instrument support and synchronization with licensed or uploaded tracks extend the authoring workflow. Interactive assets can be exported for Unity, Unreal Engine, Godot, Wwise and FMOD, making the tool relevant when a project already uses one of those ecosystems.

The Free plan includes composer workflows, Reactional SDK access, and forum and Discord support, but games using it require a Reactional splash screen. Studio adds composer and SDK access, global licensing coverage, monetisation support, a dedicated contact, and an optional splash screen; pricing is quote-based. Output is delivered as proprietary Reactional Theme bundles with encrypted composition files, so teams should account for that format in their content pipeline. Choose Composer when adaptive runtime music, engine exports and note-level control are central requirements. Teams seeking conventional audio exports, open formats or a simpler loop-focused workflow should consider a different tool.
