RCzechia is an open-source R package for downloading and exposing Czech shapefiles and other spatial objects. It is aimed at analysts and developers who need Czech administrative, cadastral, natural-feature or terrain data for analysis and visualization. The package runs on Windows, macOS and Linux as desktop software, rather than as a hosted GIS application, and its focused geographic scope makes it most suitable for projects centered on the Czech Republic.

The package is free and open source, with no paid tier structure to evaluate. Its main value is breadth within that national focus: users can access boundaries for regions, districts and municipalities, along with cadastral areas, election districts and postal-code areas. Natural datasets cover rivers, lakes, roads, railways, protected areas and forests. Terrain is supplied as a terra raster object, and high- and low-resolution shape options help match data detail to a project’s needs.

RCzechia also connects to the ČÚZK API for geocoding and reverse geocoding, while Amazon S3 hosts downloadable data files. Because those files are retrieved remotely, a working internet connection is needed for full use. Community support and documentation are the listed support channels. Choose RCzechia when a project needs Czech spatial inputs inside an R workflow and values a ready-made national dataset collection. Choose a broader GIS platform instead when you need extensive analysis tools, dashboard building, mobile apps or geographic coverage beyond the Czech Republic.

    • It provides limited analysis features compared with full GIS platforms
