Our verdict on Ratspeak
Ratspeak is an open-source messaging app built on the Reticulum encrypted mesh networking stack. It is aimed at people who need private conversations across varied transports, including off-grid operators, community mesh builders, privacy-conscious users, and developers. It supports text and group conversations, file and image sharing, and offline delivery through store-and-forward. Cryptographic identities mean users do not need accounts or phone numbers. The app is free and has desktop builds for macOS, Windows, and Linux, plus Android downloads; iOS distribution is marked as coming soon.
Its main distinction is transport flexibility. Bluetooth, LoRa, Wi-Fi, and TCP are supported, allowing messaging over different links rather than relying on a single intermediary server. Reticulum provides the distributed networking basis, while end-to-end encryption protects private messages. This makes Ratspeak a fit for users building or joining mesh networks, particularly where conventional connectivity is not the goal. Group chats and file and image sharing add practical options beyond one-to-one text, and store-and-forward supports delivery when recipients are offline.
The trade-off is that Ratspeak is a specialized mesh messenger, not a general-purpose replacement for an established account-based chat service. Experimental peer-to-peer voice calls should not be treated as a mature calling feature, and presence is unproven. Its platform reach is broad across desktop and mobile, though iOS availability is still forthcoming. Community and documentation are the listed support channels. Choose Ratspeak if encrypted messaging over multiple mesh transports matters more than familiar service-based connectivity; users who need proven presence or dependable voice calling should look elsewhere.
