rasdaman is an open-source multidimensional array database for storing, querying, and processing raster data, datacubes, geo coverages, and 3D or 4D arrays. It is aimed at teams working with satellite imagery, sensor time series, climate and ocean data, geophysical volumes, scientific simulations, and life-science imagery. The community edition is self-hosted and includes multidimensional array storage, freely definable cell types, raster and datacube querying, and OGC geospatial services through petascope.

Its core strength is depth in raster and array operations. The SQL-like rasql language supports array retrieval and manipulation, while tiled storage, spatial indexing, server-side analytics, compression, and coordinate reference system reprojection through project() support data-intensive geospatial workflows. Interfaces include OGC WCS, WCPS, WCS-T, and WMS, with C++ and Java client APIs. Integrations span R, Python, Java, C++, OpenLayers, Leaflet, NASA WorldWind, QGIS, MapServer, GeoServer, GDAL, OPeNDAP, and ArcGIS, giving it a broad fit across scientific, GIS, and application environments.

The free community edition suits organizations that can operate a Linux-based, self-hosted database and want open-source control over multidimensional data. rasdaman enterprise adds proprietary performance optimizations, parallel server clusters, web-based administration, maintenance, and developer support; its enterprise feature set is the better fit for larger operational deployments that need parallel processing, caching, federation, and scalability capabilities. Teams seeking a general-purpose spatial database or a managed service should look elsewhere, while raster-heavy and multidimensional workloads are a strong match.

rasdaman pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • SQL-like rasql queries support raster retrieval and manipulation
    • OGC services include WCS, WCPS, WCS-T, and WMS
    • Integrates with Python, R, QGIS, GDAL, ArcGIS, and more
  • Where it doesn't
    • Self-hosted deployment requires Linux or API-based operation
    • Parallel processing and caching are limited to the enterprise edition
    • The feature set is specialized for raster and array workloads
