Our verdict on Raider
Raider, presented as File Shredder, is a Linux desktop utility for permanently deleting sensitive files and folders. It is aimed at Linux users who want a focused local tool for selecting multiple files, adding folders, and processing folder contents recursively. Files can be added through drag and drop, and the application deletes them after overwriting their contents. Its free, open-source model and GPL-3.0-or-later license make it suited to individuals who prefer a simple utility rather than a broader data-erasure suite.
Its core workflow is straightforward but covers the main folder-shredding actions. Users can select multiple files or folders, choose from five fixed overwrite patterns, monitor progress, and cancel an active operation. Recursive processing makes it practical for folders containing multiple levels of files, while post-overwrite deletion completes the removal workflow. The fixed-pattern approach keeps the feature set focused, although it does not provide a broader set of configurable shredding standards. For a narrow use case—removing selected files and folders from a Linux desktop—Raider offers useful controls without adding unrelated functionality.
Raider’s scope is also its main boundary. It supports Linux desktops only, with no Windows or macOS support, and it does not include free-space shredding, scheduled shredding, or reports. The project also cautions that shredding is not perfect on modern SSDs, though it can make data recovery substantially more difficult. Choose Raider if you need free, open-source, recursive file and folder shredding on Linux. Choose an alternative if you need cross-platform coverage, free-space handling, automation, scheduling, or reporting.
