QuickCheck review
A deep, open-source choice for Haskell teams testing pure and effectful code.

QuickCheck is an open-source Haskell library for randomized property testing. Developers define program properties, generate test inputs with Arbitrary and Gen, and apply constraints to test data. QuickCheck runs properties repeatedly and reports counterexamples when they fail, making it suited to Haskell programmers testing both pure and effectful code. It is distributed through Hackage under the BSD-3-Clause license.
Its strongest area is the depth of its testing model. Automatic shrinking reduces failing inputs toward minimal counterexamples, while property combinators support constraints, classification, and coverage analysis. Test-data distributions can be examined through labels, tables, and coverage. QuickCheck also supports monadic, IO, and ST property testing, stateful testing, and random shrinkable-function generation. Template Haskell can be used to test all properties in a module, extending the library beyond isolated property definitions.
Reproducibility is another practical strength. Failed tests can be replayed and rechecked with recorded seeds and sizes, which gives teams a way to revisit counterexamples after a failure. QuickCheck is a strong fit for Haskell teams that want broad property-testing capabilities in an open-source library, especially when shrinking, stateful behavior, coverage analysis, and replay matter. Teams seeking a multi-language tool or a hosted commercial product should choose an alternative instead, since QuickCheck is focused on Haskell and library-based development rather than a paid platform with hosted workflows.
QuickCheck pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Automatic shrinking produces minimal failing counterexamples
- Replay failed tests with recorded seeds and sizes
- Covers monadic, IO, ST, stateful, and function testing
- Where it doesn't
- Supports Haskell rather than multiple programming languages
- Requires developers to define properties and generators
- Library format lacks hosted product workflows
