Our verdict on Quaternion

Quaternion is a free, open-source desktop messaging client for people who already have or plan to use a Matrix account. It connects to Matrix networks rather than operating its own messaging server, so an account and server are required. Available for Linux, Windows, and macOS, it provides room and conversation browsing with message timelines, group chat, and file attachments. Its scope is deliberately focused on desktop Matrix messaging rather than a broad set of networks or platforms.

For everyday use, Quaternion offers controls for notifications, including popup behavior, alongside configurable timeline layout and scrolling. The published feature set also includes end-to-end encrypted rooms. Encryption has an important caveat: older messages in encrypted rooms may not decrypt because of a libQuotient limitation. Buyers who rely on accessing a complete history of encrypted conversations should weigh that limitation before choosing it.

Quaternion fits solo users and small groups seeking a free, open-source desktop client and comfortable with the Matrix ecosystem. It is less suitable for people who want messaging without managing a Matrix account and server, or who need broader platform coverage than desktop systems. The listed support channel is community, so organizations that require a dedicated support route should consider an alternative. Choose Quaternion for straightforward Matrix access on a desktop; look elsewhere if account independence, broader ecosystem coverage, or dependable access to older encrypted messages is essential.
