PyTogether is a free, open-source Python IDE that runs in the browser and lets multiple people edit and execute code together. It is aimed at beginners, educators, tutors, interviewers, and pair programmers who need a shared session rather than a full local development environment. Live cursors and selections make collaboration visible, while project groups, authentication, read-only links, and embeddable interactive snippets support teaching, review, and shared examples. Project chat, voice calls, and drawing keep communication inside the workspace.

Its strongest distinction is the combination of collaboration and browser execution. PyTogether runs Python with Pyodide and includes NumPy, pandas, Matplotlib, and SciPy, giving learning and instructional sessions access to common scientific tools without requiring a local installation. Integrated CodeMirror linting provides basic code feedback, while automatic saving every minute and on exit helps preserve session work. Users can access it as a hosted web application or self-host it, which gives teams another deployment option when they want to manage the application themselves.

The trade-off is focus. PyTogether supports shared Python work well, but it is not positioned as a deep individual development environment: code intelligence is basic, and debugging, testing, profiling, remote development, and Python-environment management are outside its feature set. Choose it for collaborative lessons, pair programming, interviews, and lightweight browser-based experimentation. Developers who need advanced code navigation, structured testing, debugging workflows, or broader development-environment controls should choose a more fully featured Python IDE instead.

PyTogether pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Real-time editing with live cursors, chat, voice calls, and drawing
    • Runs Python in the browser with Pyodide and scientific libraries
    • Free, open source, shareable, and available for self-hosting
  • Where it doesn't
    • Lacks advanced code intelligence beyond basic linting
    • No debugger, test runner, or profiler support
    • Web-only with no remote-development or environment-management features
