PyPI is the public package repository for Python software, serving developers, maintainers, open-source projects, and organizations. It supports package discovery, installation, publishing, and distribution through project pages, package files, and standardized APIs. The service covers both wheels and source distributions, with project metadata, release management, and collaboration features for teams working within the Python ecosystem.

The free public service is the main attraction for individual developers and open-source maintainers. Organizations can choose Corporate Organizations at $5 per user per month, which adds organization accounts and team and project collaboration. Qualifying community organizations can use Community Organizations at no cost, with organization features included. This structure makes PyPI practical for public package distribution, while commercial teams should account for organization billing.

PyPI also provides HTML and JSON package index APIs, a project metadata and release JSON API, API tokens, and Trusted Publishers for uploads. Account-level two-factor authentication and role-based organization access add useful controls for publishing and collaboration. Its focus is deliberately narrow: PyPI serves Python rather than multiple package ecosystems, and organization accounts do not support private packages. The default project file limit is 100 MB, though it may be increased. Choose PyPI for public Python package publishing and discovery; teams requiring verified private-package support should choose a registry designed for private distribution.
