pyenv review
A focused, open-source tool for switching Python versions across projects and shells.

pyenv is an open-source command-line tool for installing and switching between multiple Python versions on Linux and macOS. It suits Python developers and teams that need separate interpreters for different projects without adopting a broader, multi-language environment manager. Version selection can apply globally, to a project, or only to the current shell, while a .python-version file lets projects declare their preferred Python version. pyenv also supports multiple Python distributions, including CPython, PyPy, Stackless Python, and Jython.
Its main strength is focused version control through familiar shell mechanisms. PATH-based shims route Python commands to the selected installation, and PYENV_VERSION can override the active choice when a temporary change is needed. Automatic switching, shell integration, command search across installed versions, and plugin support add flexibility without changing the tool's single-language focus. Project pinning and lockfile support also suit teams that want reproducible environment choices alongside their existing project workflow.
pyenv is free and open source, so there are no subscription tiers to compare. The tradeoff is scope: it manages Python versions and distributions, but it is not positioned as a general development environment manager for several languages. Native Windows installations are not officially supported; Windows users are directed to the separate pyenv-win fork. Choose pyenv if your team works primarily with Python on Linux or macOS and wants lightweight, explicit version switching. Consider an alternative if native Windows support or broader language management is a requirement.

- Where it doesn't
- Focused on Python rather than multiple programming languages
- Native Windows installations are not officially supported
- Command-line setup may require shell and PATH configuration
