Our verdict on Pure Score Reader

For musicians who already keep sheet music as PDFs, Pure Score Reader provides a mobile library for practice, lessons, and performance. It runs on iPhone, iPad, Android phones, and Android tablets, with single-page or two-page views, smart zoom, and margin cropping. Players can add pen or highlighter marks, organize them in layers, and read and annotate scores offline. Its focus is individual score reading and organization rather than a broader music workflow, making it a fit for solo players who want to carry and mark up digital parts on a mobile device.

The reader’s organization tools connect directly to performance preparation: labels and folders help sort a library, title or composer search helps locate scores, and setlists can combine selected pages from different pieces. Page turns are available by tap or swipe, as well as through a Bluetooth foot pedal. Optional synchronization runs through the user’s Google Drive, while scores are also stored on the device for offline access. That combination suits musicians who want local access with a cloud-sync option; it is less suited to anyone looking for desktop access or an ecosystem beyond mobile PDF use.

Pure Score Reader has a Free plan and a one-time Essential purchase. Free includes annotations, layers, and Google Drive sync, but limits scores, setlists, and PDF size. Essential removes those limits with unlimited scores, unlimited setlists, support for any PDF file size, and future updates included. This makes the free tier a way to assess the reader with a smaller library, while Essential is aimed at players whose collections or files exceed those limits. Choose it for mobile PDF reading, layered marking, and setlists; look elsewhere if desktop availability or a wider range of score formats is central to your needs.
