Our verdict on Pulsar

Pulsar is a free, open-source application for low-latency game streaming and remote desktop access. It is designed for gamers who want control over their streaming infrastructure, as well as IT and support teams that need remote access between supported devices. Hosts can run sessions on Windows, macOS or Linux, while clients are available for Windows, macOS, Linux and Android. The project is GPLv3-licensed and supports self-hosted deployments.

Its standout capability is the combination of high-quality streaming and connection control. Pulsar supports hardware H.265 and AV1 encoding, resolutions up to 4K, streaming up to 120 fps, HDR, ultrawide displays, multichannel audio and multi-monitor setups. Adaptive bitrate is intended to respond to changing network conditions, while direct peer-to-peer connections can fall back to relays. End-to-end encryption, controller mapping for Xbox and PlayStation devices, file transfer, clipboard synchronization and session chat extend it beyond basic game streaming.

Pulsar is a good fit for users who value open-source software, encrypted connections and the option to self-host relay and device-identity infrastructure. That flexibility also brings more operational responsibility than a service centered on a managed ecosystem. Platform coverage is narrower than some alternatives: iOS is planned for a future release, but current downloadable clients cover desktop operating systems and Android. The project is described as Alpha, so buyers seeking a mature, broad device footprint should consider another option. Pulsar makes the most sense for technically comfortable users and teams that prioritize control over convenience.
