Our verdict on Project MUSE
Project MUSE is a web-based academic research platform from Johns Hopkins University Press, designed for libraries, institutions, and researchers working with humanities and social-sciences scholarship. It brings together full-text scholarly journals and books from university presses, scholarly societies, and nonprofit publishers. The collection includes journal articles, book chapters, abstracts and summaries, critical editions, reference works, and primary source material. Individuals can purchase selected content, while libraries can acquire journal collections, individual titles, and book collections.
Pricing is organized around institutional acquisition and selected individual purchases. The PLUS+ Package includes 90 journal titles from 40+ publishers. The publicly listed PLUS+ fee applies to the 2027 package, and institutional journal and book collection pricing is quote-based. A 45-day free trial is available. For libraries, the platform’s ecosystem fit is a major consideration: Project MUSE supports IP, Shibboleth, referring-URL, and secure-proxy authentication, along with library holdings management through MARC and KBART files. It also works with Portico and library discovery services.
Discovery is a central strength. Unified search covers books and journals, while structured filters narrow results by content type, publisher, journal, author, language, research area, and year. Open-access books and journals extend access, and unlimited downloading and printing support research workflows. The mobile-friendly interface adds flexibility, but the web-only platform and absence of AI features may matter to buyers seeking broader tool support. Project MUSE is a strong fit for institutions prioritizing curated humanities and social-sciences full text with library integration; buyers seeking wide coverage outside those disciplines should consider a broader database.
