Our verdict on Project Kestrel

Project Kestrel is a free, open-source desktop application for bird photographers who need more than basic photo selection. It groups burst images into scenes, detects and segments birds, scores frames for sharpness using machine learning, and tags photos by bird species and family. Its culling assistant applies quality rules, while library search can filter by species or family. The app runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and it can open selected photos in external editors.

Its strongest fit is a local-first workflow. The Free desktop app runs without an account, internet connection, or cloud service, which keeps the core culling process on the user's computer. The macOS App Store version costs $10 one time and adds automatic updates, while direct macOS downloads remain available. For larger imports, Cloud Compute Free provides optional cloud acceleration. Blue Jay costs $20 per month, billed monthly, and Sandpiper costs $50 per month, billed monthly; both add optional cloud acceleration. This gives users a free local path and separate paid options for remote GPU processing.

Project Kestrel also fits photographers working across established editing tools. Ratings can be exported to Adobe Lightroom, Darktable, and Capture One, and selected photos can be opened in external editors. The combination of burst grouping, bird detection, species tagging, sharpness scoring, and quality-rule culling gives it a specialized role in bird-image organization. Choose it if species-aware review and local processing matter more than broad, general-purpose culling. Choose an alternative if your workflow does not involve birds or if you prefer a tool centered on a wider range of photographic subjects.
