Our verdict on Prince

Prince is a document formatter for publishers, developers, and organizations that produce print-ready, downloadable, or archival PDFs. It converts HTML, XHTML, XML, and SVG using CSS, JavaScript, and web standards, with support for input assets including JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIFF, WebP, and AVIF. Its strongest fit is high-fidelity HTML-to-PDF deployment where page structure, document standards, forms, and server integration matter.

The pricing model separates non-commercial use from desktop, server, academic, and commercial deployment. The Non-commercial License is free, can run on a server, and adds a logo to the first page of generated PDFs. The Desktop License costs $495 one time for one user on one computer and includes 12 months of upgrades and email support. The Academic Server License costs $1,900 one time for academic institutions, while the Per Server License costs $3,800 one time for one production server plus installation on up to two other computers. Both include 12 months of upgrades and support. The Commercial Site License runs on any number of servers in a cluster or cloud, with pricing based on document type and volume.

Prince stands out for CSS paged-media controls covering headers, footers, page numbers, tables, columns, floats, and footnotes. It also supports bookmarks, links, metadata, encryption, attachments, tagged PDF, PDF/A, PDF/UA, PDF/X, fillable forms, and signature fields. Deployment options include Windows, macOS, Linux, API access, and self-hosting, with command-line, GUI, wrapper, and JSON job-control interfaces. Java, C#/.NET, PHP, Ruby on Rails, and Node.js wrappers support server applications. Choose Prince when layout fidelity and document output depth are priorities; choose an alternative if you need a lower-cost commercial license or a hosted deployment with simpler pricing.
