PrestoDB review
A high-performance federation engine for querying data across multiple systems.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
PrestoDB is an open-source distributed SQL query engine for analytics, interactive queries, batch workloads, and federated access to existing data systems. Its coordinator-and-worker architecture distributes query execution across a cluster, while connectors provide access to heterogeneous sources. Teams that need to query systems such as Hive, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Kafka, Iceberg, BigQuery, Cassandra, MongoDB, Elasticsearch, Oracle, SQL Server, Redis, Redshift, Delta Lake, and Druid can use SQL across multiple catalogs and platforms.
Its strongest fit is federation at scale. Cost-based join enumeration and join distribution selection help the engine plan queries across connected sources, while resource groups provide query queueing and resource limits for workload control. PostgreSQL and MySQL connector support broadens access to operational data, and client and server REST APIs support query submission and control. These capabilities make PrestoDB a practical choice for organizations that want one distributed query layer over existing systems rather than another standalone database.
PrestoDB also provides authentication, authorization, access control, and secure communications, with deployment options including Docker, Homebrew, Helm, and tarballs. The self-hosted model gives teams control over deployment and infrastructure, but it also means the platform is best suited to organizations able to administer a distributed data service. Choose PrestoDB for open-source federated SQL, horizontal scaling, and broad connector coverage. Choose an alternative when the priority is a managed hosted service, a simpler setup, or a general-purpose relational database.
PrestoDB pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Federates SQL queries across diverse catalogs and data systems
- Cost-based optimization and resource groups support controlled workloads
- Multiple deployment options plus security and REST API capabilities
- Where it doesn't
- Self-hosted deployment requires cluster and infrastructure administration
- It is designed for analytics, not as a general-purpose relational database
- Federated performance depends on connected systems and query design
