Presto is an open-source distributed SQL query engine for interactive and batch analytics. It is designed for organizations that want to query relational databases, NoSQL systems, data warehouses, data lakes and other sources through a single ANSI SQL interface. A query can combine data from multiple systems, while deployment options include local downloads, Docker, command-line access, JDBC and REST-based query submission. Linux, macOS, API and self-hosted environments are supported.

Its main strength is connector-based federation across different data architectures. Presto includes integrations with Hive, HDFS, Amazon S3 and Kafka, and its connector model is intended to reach databases, data lakes, warehouses and NoSQL systems. Distributed execution divides work between coordinator and worker nodes, which suits teams running analytics across multiple sources. REST access supports query submission and result retrieval, while JDBC provides a familiar connection method for compatible tools and applications.

Presto also provides row filters and column masks through access-control implementations, along with optional file and working-set caching through Alluxio. The open-source model gives teams control over deployment rather than placing the product in a vendor-priced SaaS plan. That makes Presto a fit for engineering and data teams prepared to operate a self-hosted query engine and select the connectors, access controls and deployment components they need. Teams seeking a managed service, a broader ready-made integration catalog or a simpler onboarding path should consider an alternative.

Presto pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Federates queries across databases, lakes, warehouses and NoSQL systems
    • Distributed execution across coordinator and worker nodes
    • REST, JDBC and connector-based access for flexible deployment
  • Where it doesn't
    • Self-hosted deployment requires managing the environment
    • Listed integrations center on a focused set of data systems
    • Access control depends on supported implementations
