PresentMon is an open-source set of Windows tools for capturing and analyzing graphics-application performance. It is intended for game developers, performance engineers, and graphics analysts who need frame-level CPU, GPU, display, latency, and presentation metrics. The project includes a standalone console application, a service exposing the PresentMon API, and a graphical capture application with real-time overlays. Its free distribution makes it a practical option for teams that want detailed profiling without a paid plan.

Its ecosystem fit is broad within Windows graphics workflows. PresentMon supports DirectX, OpenGL, and Vulkan applications across desktop and UWP environments. CSV export provides per-frame metrics for later analysis, while ETW trace collection and analysis supports deeper Windows performance workflows. The API and SDK extend the toolset to client applications, and the overlay can show real-time graphs and metric readouts during analysis. GPU telemetry covers utilization, temperature, power, and VRAM usage, alongside workload, latency, busy-time, and wait-time measurements.

The main tradeoff is scope. PresentMon is Windows-focused, and its published positioning does not provide verified render-API capture. That makes it a strong fit for frame-time, CPU/GPU, latency, display, and telemetry work on Windows, especially when CSV, ETW, overlays, or programmatic access matter. It is less suitable for buyers seeking a cross-platform product or verified render-API capture as a central capability. Choose PresentMon when open-source Windows profiling and detailed per-frame telemetry are the priority; consider an alternative when broader platform coverage is required.

PresentMon pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Free, open-source profiling for Windows desktop and UWP applications
    • Frame-level CPU, GPU, display, latency, and presentation metrics
    • CSV, overlays, ETW, API, and SDK support for analysis workflows
  • Where it doesn't
    • Windows-focused rather than a cross-platform profiling tool
    • No verified render-API capture
    • Technical tooling may suit specialists more than casual users
