PowerDNS Authoritative Essentials combines the open-source PowerDNS Authoritative Server with the commercial ZoneControl web interface and commercial support. It is designed for organizations managing authoritative DNS for websites, APIs, and connected services within their own infrastructure. Linux teams get domain and zone administration, bulk changes, role-based permissions, version history, rollback, automatic DNSSEC, and installation support through Linux packages and Ansible roles. The product is available for small, mid-market, and enterprise organizations that want to operate DNS themselves.

The published plans are differentiated primarily by managed capacity. Basic costs $9,800 per year for domain management up to 8 cores. Advanced costs $13,600 per year and raises that limit to 16 cores. Pro costs $17,400 per year for up to 24 cores. All three plans include web-based domain administration, one-click DNSSEC support, version and history management, permission management, and email support during business hours. The package also provides a JSON/REST API for zones, metadata, and DNSSEC key material, plus bulk administration features that support operational workflows.

Its main tradeoff is deployment responsibility: PowerDNS does not host customer DNS zones, so the customer operates the software and its infrastructure. The package also does not provide verified health checks, routing, or secondary DNS, making it less suitable for teams seeking traffic steering or broader managed-DNS capabilities. Support is offered through email, tickets, and documentation, but not around the clock. Choose PowerDNS Authoritative Essentials when self-hosted authoritative DNS, DNSSEC, access controls, and change management are the priority; choose an alternative when hosted operations, health-based routing, or secondary DNS are required.

PowerDNS Authoritative Essentials pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Includes ZoneControl web administration, bulk changes, versioning, and rollback.
    • Provides automatic DNSSEC signing, key management, and a JSON/REST API.
    • Offers RBAC, Linux packages, Ansible roles, and commercial email support.
  • Where it doesn't
    • Self-hosted deployment leaves infrastructure operation with the customer.
    • Does not include verified health checks, routing, or secondary DNS.
    • Support is available during business hours rather than 24/7.
