PoWA is an open-source performance monitoring and workload analysis tool for PostgreSQL teams. It collects and aggregates statistics from PostgreSQL instances, then presents historical reports through a web interface with charts, tables, and optimization suggestions. Local monitoring uses a PostgreSQL background worker, while the collector and repository architecture supports remote monitoring of multiple PostgreSQL servers, including standby servers.

Its strongest fit is detailed PostgreSQL workload analysis. PoWA can use pg_stat_statements for query execution statistics, pg_qualstats for predicate and WHERE-clause statistics, and pg_stat_kcache for operating-system cache metrics. Wait-event graphs and tables add visibility into database and query waits, while configuration-change and server-restart tracking helps place performance changes in context. Integration with pg_wait_sampling, pg_track_settings, and HypoPG extends the monitoring stack with wait sampling, settings history, and hypothetical-index testing. Automatic index suggestions are particularly useful for teams investigating whether index changes could improve workloads before making them.

PoWA is free and open source, with self-hosted deployment on Linux and a web interface. Its narrow PostgreSQL focus is an advantage for PostgreSQL administrators who want workload history, query profiling, wait analysis, and multi-instance coverage without a paid tier. It is less suitable for organizations that need one monitoring product across several database engines or require execution-plan analysis as a verified feature. Choose PoWA when PostgreSQL depth and ownership of the monitoring environment matter more than broad platform coverage.

PoWA pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Historical workload reports with query and predicate statistics
    • Wait-event views, configuration tracking, and restart history
    • Hypothetical-index testing and monitoring across multiple instances
  • Where it doesn't
    • Supports PostgreSQL rather than multiple database engines
    • No verified execution-plan feature
    • Self-hosted deployment requires PostgreSQL-based infrastructure
