PouchContainer review
A capable Linux container engine for Alibaba Cloud-compatible, self-hosted environments.

PouchContainer is an open-source container engine from Alibaba Group for teams running self-hosted Linux container infrastructure. Its pouch CLI and pouchd daemon cover container and image creation, execution, inspection, and lifecycle management. The product is particularly suited to Alibaba Cloud-compatible environments and deployments that need Kubernetes CRI support, OCI-compatible images, or Docker-compatible APIs without a paid license. It also supports container image pull, push, load, and registry mirror operations through its container tooling.
Its ecosystem coverage is the main reason to consider it. PouchContainer integrates with containerd and supports runC, runlxc, runV, and Clear Containers runtimes. Integrated BuildKit support handles container image building, while Dragonfly provides peer-to-peer image distribution. CNI networking and CSI storage compatibility connect the engine to established container infrastructure, and Kubernetes integration is documented through the Container Runtime Interface. LXCFS-based isolation, with optional seccomp, AppArmor, and SELinux support, adds configuration choices for Linux deployments.
The trade-off is host coverage and project currency. Official installation documentation targets Alibaba Cloud Linux 2, Ubuntu 16.04, and CentOS 7, all of which are legacy distribution targets, so teams should assess their operating-system requirements before adoption. Windows containers are outside its stated scope. The official release page identifies 1.3.1 as the latest release, while current maintenance status is not clearly stated. Choose PouchContainer when its Linux targets, runtime flexibility, and Alibaba Cloud alignment fit your environment; choose another container engine when Windows support, newer documented host targets, or clearer ongoing maintenance signals are essential.
