Postman is an API platform for developers and teams building, testing, documenting, and collaborating on APIs. Its API Client sends and inspects requests across HTTP, GraphQL, gRPC, WebSocket, and MQTT. Collections bring requests, examples, documentation, and tests together, while JavaScript scripts support pre-request logic, response validation, and multi-step workflows. It suits teams that want one environment spanning API development, functional testing, documentation, mocking, and collaboration.

Its breadth is the main reason to choose it. The Collection Runner supports functional API tests and performance testing runs, while scheduled collection runs extend testing into the Postman Cloud. Postman CLI supports CI/CD execution, and cloud-hosted mock servers help teams work before an API is fully available. Specification tools can design, import, validate, and synchronize API definitions. AI features inspect responses, write assertions, and suggest fixes. Availability across web, Windows, macOS, Linux, Chrome extension, and API surfaces also supports varied workflows.

The pricing structure ranges from a capable Free plan to paid tiers with progressively broader team and governance features. Free includes the API client, core tools, specs, mock servers, Collection Runner, and performance testing runs. Solo adds data-driven testing with exports, expanded API monitoring, and unlimited custom domains for $9 per month with annual billing. Team costs $19 per user per month annually and adds collaboration, unlimited workspace and collection viewers, and basic role-based access control. Enterprise costs $49 per user per month annually and adds API Catalog, advanced governance and audit reporting, and private test and Flows runners. Teams needing broad API coverage should consider Postman; those prioritizing open-source software or advanced governance without Enterprise pricing should look elsewhere.

Postman pros and cons

  • Where it wins

    • Combines functional tests, mocks, specifications, monitoring, and CI/CD
    • Offers web, desktop, extension, and API access across major platforms
  • Where it doesn't
    • Advanced governance and audit reporting require the Enterprise plan
    • Team and Enterprise pricing is charged per user
    • Postman is proprietary rather than open source
