Our verdict on Posnic
Posnic is an open-source point-of-sale and billing system for retail shops and restaurants. Its Community Edition is aimed at businesses that want a local checkout system with GST invoicing, barcode scanning, inventory control, customer accounts, reporting, and staff permissions. The local edition runs on Windows, macOS, or Linux and stores the database on the shop computer, making it a practical fit for small businesses that prefer local sales and stock workflows. Multiple outlets and branch-specific stock also support retailers operating more than one location.
The free Community Edition is priced at INR 0 forever and includes no trial timer or Posnic account requirement. Its scope goes well beyond basic billing: the product covers returns, part payments, held bills, quick sale, variants, purchases, supplier returns, stock logs, low-stock alerts, GST reports, HSN codes, expense and profit reports, and staff-activity reporting. Customer loyalty points, tiers, redemption, and referrals add retention tools, while configurable local backups give owners control over local data handling. Businesses seeking synchronization, remote dashboards, or off-site backups can consider Posnic’s optional paid cloud services, which require a written quote.
Platform coverage includes web, Windows, macOS, Linux, API, and self-hosted deployment. Posnic documents a self-hosted server path for browser access and outlines device paths for printers, scanners, cash drawers, weighing scales, and customer displays. Exact hardware models should be verified before purchase. Posnic is a strong choice for Indian small businesses prioritizing free GST functionality, local control, and a wide retail feature set. It is less suitable for buyers who require transparent cloud pricing at the outset, a fully cloud-managed setup, or hardware selection without model-level verification.
