Portworx PX-DR review
A focused DR add-on for Kubernetes and OpenShift applications across hybrid environments.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
Portworx PX-DR is a disaster recovery product for container applications running on Kubernetes and OpenShift clusters. It is designed for teams that need to protect application data and Kubernetes resources across on-premises, public-cloud, private-cloud, or hybrid environments. The product also supports selected KubeVirt virtual machines, making it relevant where Kubernetes workloads and virtualized workloads share a recovery strategy. PX-DR is presented as an add-on to Portworx Enterprise and is self-hosted.
The published pricing model is contact sales, with no free plan and a 30-day free trial. Pricing is not presented as a numeric amount. Its ecosystem fit is specific but broad within Kubernetes: documented integrations include Kubernetes, OpenShift, Amazon EKS, SUSE Virtualization, VMware vSphere Kubernetes Service, Rancher Kubernetes Engine 2, and KubeVirt. Buyers should expect to evaluate the product in the context of their existing Portworx Enterprise deployment and target cluster environments rather than as a standalone general-purpose cloud backup service.
PX-DR’s main strength is its range of recovery approaches. Synchronous disaster recovery supports zero-RPO recovery for metro-area deployments, while asynchronous replication supports geographically distributed clusters. It replicates application data and supported Kubernetes resources, with application failover and failback workflows plus scheduled migration policies for asynchronous DR. Multi-cluster recovery and deployment across hybrid environments add flexibility, but the narrow Kubernetes and OpenShift focus will not suit organizations seeking broad protection for unrelated infrastructure. Choose PX-DR for Kubernetes-centered recovery orchestration; consider an alternative if your workloads sit mainly outside that ecosystem.
