Ponder is an open-source TypeScript framework for building EVM data indexers. Developers configure chains, contracts and accounts, then write indexing functions that transform on-chain events into an application schema stored in Postgres. It is aimed at teams building blockchain application backends and data-driven crypto apps, particularly those that want to operate their own indexer rather than use a hosted indexing service.

Its main appeal is the path from indexed data to application queries. Ponder generates a GraphQL API from the configured schema and supports both SQL queries over HTTP and direct SQL access in Postgres. A local development server with hot reloading supports iterative work on indexing logic. Multiple RPC endpoints can be configured with fallback and load-balancing options, while Postgres, Viem, Bun and Node.js are among its integrations. This makes it a focused fit for TypeScript-based EVM projects whose existing stack can run Node.js and Postgres; it is not a contract deployment platform or an RPC/node provider.

Ponder is open source with a free plan, and the published product details describe no paid tiers. Production deployments are self-hosted, with HTTP serving scalable separately, so teams need to provide RPC endpoints and manage the infrastructure around the indexer. That trade-off suits developers who want control over data processing and query access, but is less suitable for teams seeking a managed service or coverage beyond EVM-compatible chains. Choose Ponder when a TypeScript workflow, Postgres storage and self-hosting align; consider alternatives if hosted operations or a broader chain focus is central.

Ponder pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Indexes smart-contract and account events across EVM-compatible chains
    • Generates GraphQL and SQL access to indexed data stored in Postgres
    • Local development server includes hot reloading
  • Where it doesn't
    • Focused on EVM-compatible chains rather than broader blockchain coverage
    • Requires teams to configure and provide RPC endpoints
    • Self-hosted deployment means teams manage production infrastructure
