Podman review
A free, Docker-compatible container engine with rootless execution and Kubernetes YAML support.

Podman is a daemonless, open-source container engine and command-line tool for managing containers, pods, images, and volumes. It is suited to developers, platform teams, and organizations that want Docker-compatible workflows without a paid product tier. Core tasks include finding, pulling, building, running, tagging, pushing, and deploying container images in OCI and Docker formats. Rootless execution through user namespaces adds an operating mode for users who do not want containers managed as root.
The feature set covers the main container lifecycle, including image building from Containerfiles or Dockerfiles, registry operations, and pod management. Podman also provides a REST API with Docker-compatible and Podman-specific interfaces, giving Docker API clients a path into the engine. Its Kubernetes YAML commands can create, run, and tear down local workloads, which is useful when development workflows already describe workloads in that format. Podman machine extends the engine to macOS and Windows hosts by managing a Linux virtual machine.
Platform fit is a major consideration. Podman supports Linux, macOS, Windows, and FreeBSD at the category level, while macOS and Windows use a Linux virtual machine and run Linux containers rather than native Windows containers. Integrations include Docker API clients, Kubernetes YAML, GitHub Actions, Visual Studio Code, and Kind. Choose Podman for free, open-source container management with rootless execution, Docker-compatible interfaces, and local Kubernetes YAML workflows. Choose an alternative if native Windows containers or Kubernetes CRI support is central to the environment.
