Our verdict on Plerd

Plerd is an open-source, self-hosted blogging platform for developers, solo publishers, podcasts, and other chronological sites. It watches a source directory, converts Markdown posts into static HTML and XML, and republishes the site when source files change. GitHub-Flavored Markdown processing supports familiar authoring, while generated archives, tags, Atom feeds, and JSON Feed output cover core publishing and syndication needs. Its focus is minimalist static blogging rather than a broad hosted content-management experience.

Plerd’s pricing model is open source, with no paid tiers shaping the feature set. Deployment is self-hosted, and operation centers on command-line tools and source files. That keeps the publishing model direct, but it also places hosting and operational responsibility with the user. Template Toolkit templates can be customized, with theme editing handled through custom code. The setup therefore fits developers comfortable managing a self-hosted workflow more naturally than publishers seeking a visual editor or managed onboarding.

The ecosystem is intentionally focused. Dropbox and rclone-compatible workflows provide file-syncing options, while Webmention support connects the publishing flow with an IndieWeb-oriented approach. Microformats and Webmention support add depth for publishers who value decentralized interaction and syndication. At the same time, Plerd does not provide scheduling, analytics, domain management, or the broader conveniences associated with hosted platforms. Choose it for a lightweight, code-oriented static blog with Markdown at its center; choose an alternative if you need managed hosting, visual theme editing, built-in analytics, or a fuller publishing suite.
