Our verdict on PKHeX
PKHeX is a Windows Forms application for editing decrypted Pokémon core-series save files. It is aimed at players and preservation-focused users who need to modify complete saves, individual Pokémon entity files, inventory data, progression, or character stats. Its scope also covers GameCube Pokémon memory-card saves, making it useful across a broad range of Pokémon save formats. The project is open source, distributed under the GNU GPL version 3, and maintained as a public GitHub repository.
Its main strength is breadth within the Pokémon ecosystem. PKHeX can import and convert Mystery Gift files, bring in GO Park entities, and import teams from decrypted 3DS Battle Videos. It also transfers data between generations with format conversion and provides an inventory editor alongside direct save editing. Batch editing with undo and redo makes repeated changes more manageable, while the interface displays editable data and can export modified saves. These capabilities make PKHeX more than a single-purpose character editor; it is a conversion and save-management utility for several related workflows.
The practical boundaries are clear. PKHeX runs on Windows and edits decrypted save files only, so it is not a general editor for every platform or an encrypted-save workflow. Automatic backups are available when enabled, but they require a backup folder to exist and the feature to be configured. Choose PKHeX if you want extensive Pokémon save support, generation conversion, imports, and batch operations in an open-source application. Choose another option if you need cross-platform support or direct editing of encrypted saves.
