Our verdict on Piper
Piper is an open-source, local text-to-speech engine for developers and projects that need offline speech synthesis. It supports command-line generation, HTTP, Python, and C/C++ interfaces, with WAV export across web, Linux, and API workflows. Its intended audience includes automation builders, accessibility projects, and users who want speech generation without depending on a hosted service. Voice models are downloadable, available in many languages, and may support multiple speakers.
Its strongest advantage is the breadth of ways to integrate speech into a local system. Piper can stream raw audio, use CUDA acceleration through ONNX Runtime, and connect with Home Assistant and NVDA. The API coverage also gives teams flexibility: lightweight scripts can use the command line or Python, while larger applications can use HTTP or C/C++. Training new voice models adds a path for customization, although that requires more technical effort than simply downloading an existing model.
Piper is free and open source, but its licensing profile requires attention. Commercial use is not supported, and individual voice models may have their own licensing terms. The original rhasspy/piper repository was archived on October 6, 2025, with development directed to OHF-Voice/piper1-gpl. Choose Piper for free, local automation, offline accessibility features, and developer-controlled deployment. Choose an alternative when commercial rights, a managed hosted service, or a simpler no-code workflow is essential.
