Pinecone is a fully managed vector database for engineering teams building AI applications. It stores and retrieves dense and sparse vectors, supports metadata filtering, and provides semantic, lexical, full-text, and hybrid search. Its use cases include retrieval-augmented generation, recommendation systems, semantic search, and AI-agent knowledge retrieval. Official SDKs are available for Python, Node.js, Java, Go, .NET, and Rust, with cloud, API, and self-hosted deployment options listed.

The search feature set is broader than a single semantic-search workflow. Pinecone supports dense-vector semantic search, sparse-vector lexical search, full-text search with BM25 and Lucene queries, and hybrid search that combines keyword and semantic signals. Integrated embedding models, automatic indexing, background algorithm selection, metadata filtering, and namespaces for data organization add options for teams managing different retrieval patterns. Dedicated read nodes are available on the Standard plan and above.

Pricing spans four plans. Starter is free and includes included usage, dense, sparse, and full-text indexes, console metrics, and community support. Builder costs $20 per month with flat monthly pricing, increased usage limits, multiple projects and users, and Prometheus and Datadog monitoring. Standard starts at $50 per month minimum usage and adds pay-as-you-go usage, dedicated read nodes, object-storage imports, backup and restore, RBAC, and SSO. Enterprise starts at $500 per month minimum usage and adds a 99.95% uptime SLA, Bring Your Own Cloud, private endpoints, customer-managed encryption keys, audit logs, and SCIM. Pinecone suits teams seeking a managed service with flexible retrieval capabilities; teams requiring open-source software should choose an alternative.
