Our verdict on PikeOS
For embedded systems with demanding safety, security, and real-time requirements, PikeOS combines a real-time operating system with a Type 1 separation-kernel hypervisor. Applications and guest operating systems run in isolated partitions on shared hardware. SYSGO positions it for automotive, avionics, space, rail, defense, and industrial systems, making it a fit for teams building partitioned edge devices rather than general-purpose IoT fleet platforms.
The separation architecture is the central strength: PikeOS supports time-and-space partitioning, preemptive real-time scheduling, and SMP and AMP multicore configurations. Guest environments include Linux, Android, Windows, and ELinOS; APIs include POSIX, ARINC 653, and PikeOS Native. Certified IP networking, file system, and math library components extend the platform. The vendor also lists TCP/IP, UDP, AFDX, ARINC 664, and CAN protocol support. This breadth suits projects that need different workloads and interfaces on one embedded platform, though it also means PikeOS is a specialized engineering choice rather than a lightweight operating system for simple connected devices.
CODEO provides graphical configuration, analysis, and debugging, while QEMU-based simulation and target emulation support development before deployment. SYSGO offers certification kits and board support packages, and states that a free evaluation license is available. That is distinct from a continuing free plan: purchasing requires contacting sales, so teams must engage the vendor to assess commercial terms. PikeOS is worth considering when partitioning, certification work, and real-time behavior are core requirements; teams seeking public, self-serve pricing or a fleet-management console for OTA updates should look elsewhere.
