Our verdict on Pika
Pika is a hosted blogging platform for independent writers who want to publish posts and pages without managing infrastructure. Its web editor covers blog posts, pages, custom fonts, colors, homepage customization, tagging, search, RSS feeds, automatic sitemaps, and password-protected blogs. The free Pika Pup plan supports up to 50 blog posts, 3 pages, and 50 guestbook entries, but does not include newsletter subscribers. Pika Pro is aimed at writers who want a larger publishing site and an email audience.
Pricing is straightforward across the published plans. Pika Pup is free and provides a useful starting point for a small personal blog. Pika Pro costs $6 per month when billed monthly, or $5 per month when billed annually. Pro adds unlimited blog posts and pages, email newsletters, custom domain hosting, custom CSS, custom code, and up to 1,000 newsletter subscribers. The annual plan is the clearest fit for writers who expect to publish regularly and want a custom domain or newsletter without moving to a more expansive publishing system.
Pika’s ecosystem favors independent publishing and portability. Writers can publish or update through Micropub-compatible third-party apps, including iA Writer and Drafts, while embedded media support includes YouTube, Vimeo, Spotify, and Apple Podcasts. Analytics integrations include Google Analytics, Plausible, Fathom, GoatCounter, and Umami. CSV, HTML, JSON, Markdown, and XML exports add flexibility for future moves. The trade-off is a primarily web-based experience with no native mobile app, and the platform does not provide native paid or gated memberships. Choose Pika for a personal blog with optional newsletters, customization, and export options; choose an alternative if mobile apps or built-in membership monetization are central requirements.
