phpList is open-source email marketing software for newsletters, announcements, and notifications. It suits organizations that want browser-based campaign composition while retaining the option to install and host the software on their own servers. A managed phpList Hosted service is also available. Core capabilities include subscriber lists, attributes, personalization, customizable subscribe pages, audience segmentation, behavioral targeting, scheduled campaigns, repeat sending, and support for HTML, plain-text messages, templates, images, and attachments.

The published plans show a Forever Free option with up to 300 messages per month and no time limit on the trial account. A paid plan includes 9,000 messages per month, up to 3,000 subscribers, and all Plus features. Another pricing model is based on subscriber count, with an example covering 500 subscribers and a maximum of 1 million messages per month. A Pro marketer account is intended for larger requirements, with contact sales, 200K+ messages, and unlimited subscribers. These options make phpList suitable for both small senders and larger deployments, but buyers should compare the hosted models with the operational requirements of self-hosting.

For campaign operations, phpList covers testing, scheduling, personalization, and reporting on opens, clicks, forwards, and bounces. Bounce processing can automatically remove subscribers, while API and website integration support broader workflows. Listed integrations include WordPress, Google Analytics, Piwik, AJAX, and API. The trade-off is a narrower verified integration set and a more specialized platform setup than tools centered on a broad hosted ecosystem. Choose phpList when open-source control, self-hosting, and list management matter most; consider an alternative when turnkey setup or wider native integrations are the priority.

phpList pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Open-source deployment with self-hosting and managed hosting options
    • Segmentation, behavioral targeting, scheduling, and A/B testing
    • Bounce processing, campaign statistics, and API integration
  • Where it doesn't
    • Platform setup is more specialized than hosted-only alternatives
    • Verified integration coverage centers on five listed options
    • Higher-volume plans use hosted pricing models with different limits
