Photoview is a free, open-source photo gallery for photographers and personal-server operators who want to manage photos and videos on their own infrastructure. It scans media from server directories, maps folders to albums, preserves original files, generates thumbnails, and provides web access. Multiple users can receive filesystem path-based access, while albums and individual media can be shared publicly or with password protection.

Its strongest feature is the filesystem-based organization model. Existing directory structures become albums without requiring a separate hosted library, and timeline and thumbnail generation support browsing larger collections. Photoview also handles RAW images through Darktable, extracts EXIF metadata, displays maps, and uses FFmpeg for video playback and web optimization. Optional face recognition and people grouping add discovery features without changing the underlying file organization. Nextcloud integration gives it a defined connection to that ecosystem.

The trade-off is operational scope: Photoview is self-hosted rather than a hosted photo-storage or backup service. Deployment runs through Docker or supported Linux-oriented environments, so it suits users who already operate a personal server more than people seeking a managed cloud gallery. The iOS app is no longer maintained or available on the App Store, and no current official desktop application is provided. Choose Photoview for filesystem-first control, original-quality storage, and sharing on your own server; choose a hosted service instead if mobile apps, managed infrastructure, or cloud backup are priorities.
