PhoinixDR review
An early-preview recovery tool with read-only workflows and evidence-oriented reporting.

PhoinixDR is an open-source file recovery tool for people recovering deleted files or reconstructing data from disks, USB sticks, SD cards and disk images. Its desktop application and command-line interface run on Windows 10 (21H2+) and Windows 11, as well as Linux. The project is described as an early engineering preview, making it a better fit for solo users and small teams comfortable evaluating a developing tool than for organizations that need an established recovery workflow.
Its recovery workflow emphasizes evidence and source preservation. Filesystem-aware undelete covers NTFS, FAT12/16/32, exFAT and ext2/3/4, while deep scans use signature-based carving, including for unrecognized filesystems. The tool can discover lost partitions and create virtual mounts without rewriting partition tables. It reads RAW and split RAW, E01 and split E01, VHD, VHDX and VMDK images. Recovery likelihood and confidence scores come with evidence explanations, and SHA-256 verification and exportable reports support documenting results. Source media is accessed read-only, with recovered files saved to a separate filesystem.
PhoinixDR is open source under MIT OR Apache-2.0, with a free plan. Its combination of desktop and command-line access, disk-image support and reporting may suit users who want recovery work to be inspectable and documented. The scope is narrower than tools that cover a broader range of filesystems or platforms: filesystem-aware undelete is limited to the listed formats, and the supported operating systems are Windows and Linux. The early-preview status and community support are also considerations for recovery work where dependable vendor assistance is important. Choose it for free, evidence-oriented recovery on supported systems; consider alternatives if you need broader platform coverage or dedicated support.
