pgtestdb is an open-source Go library for database-backed testing against PostgreSQL. It creates temporary databases from migrated template databases, giving individual tests isolated database state without relying on mocks. The library is aimed at teams writing Go or SQL integration tests who need repeatable schema setup, parallel execution, and direct access to a PostgreSQL server.

Its strongest feature is the template workflow. pgtestdb can migrate a template database, reuse that template while the migration hash remains unchanged, and provision isolated databases for tests. Successful test databases are deleted automatically, while databases from failed tests remain available for debugging. Locking supports parallel test execution, making the library a practical fit for suites where shared database state would create interference. Adapters cover pgmigrate, golang-migrate, goose, dbmate, Atlas, sql-migrate, Bun, and Tern, while database access includes pgx, lib/pq, and other database/sql drivers.

The trade-off is focus. pgtestdb supports PostgreSQL only and follows a self-hosted model: the user supplies the PostgreSQL server, with local, Docker, and remote options documented. Its scope is therefore narrower than tools intended to cover several database engines, hosted test environments, or broader testing platforms. Choose pgtestdb when isolated, migration-backed PostgreSQL tests are central to a Go project, particularly when parallel runs and failed-test inspection matter. Choose an alternative when multi-database coverage, managed infrastructure, or a non-Go testing workflow is the priority.

pgtestdb pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Creates isolated PostgreSQL databases for individual tests
    • Reuses migrated templates based on migration hashes
    • Preserves failed-test databases for debugging and supports parallel runs
  • Where it doesn't
    • Supports PostgreSQL rather than multiple database systems
    • Requires the user to provide a PostgreSQL server
    • Focused on Go and SQL self-hosted test workflows
