pgroll is an open-source command-line tool for applying reversible PostgreSQL schema migrations without application downtime. It is designed for teams that need to roll out application changes gradually while keeping existing and updated schema versions available at the same time. The tool is especially suited to zero-downtime schema transformation projects involving PostgreSQL 14 or later.

Its main strength is the migration model. pgroll maintains old and new schema versions simultaneously through virtual schemas, views, triggers, and backfills. Automatic column backfilling supports data movement during a migration, while up and down data transformations help coordinate changes in both directions. Active migrations can be rolled back instantly, and baseline import supports existing databases. The tool also converts ORM-generated SQL migrations, which can help connect application migration workflows with its migration format.

The platform fit is broad at the binary level: pgroll runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, supports self-hosted operation, and can connect to PostgreSQL services including Amazon RDS and Aurora. Its scope is intentionally focused, however. It is a PostgreSQL migration CLI rather than a hosted commercial service, and PostgreSQL 14 or later is required. Choose pgroll when reversible, staged schema changes and rollback are central requirements; choose another category tool when you need a multi-database migration platform or a hosted service.
