pfSense is firewall, routing, and VPN software from Netgate for home users, businesses, educational institutions, government agencies, and service providers. It supports dedicated hardware, virtual machines, and public cloud infrastructure. Core capabilities include stateful packet inspection, IP and DNS-based filtering, NAT mapping, captive portal guest networks, multi-WAN load balancing and failover, high-availability clustering with CARP, traffic shaping, logging, monitoring graphs, and network services. VPN support includes IPsec, OpenVPN, and WireGuard.
The product is available in a free open-source Community Edition and commercial pfSense Plus subscriptions. The pfSense Plus with TAC Lite tier includes best-effort support and 24/7/365 TAC support hours. TAC Pro adds a 24-hour target initial response SLA and unlimited tickets, while TAC Enterprise adds a 4-hour target initial response SLA, unlimited tickets, and the same 24/7/365 TAC support hours. This structure gives organizations a path from a free deployment to commercial software with defined support targets.
For environments that need broader operational control, pfSense Plus supports multi-instance management and a REST API through Netgate Nexus, with those capabilities applying to pfSense Plus 25.07 and later. The ecosystem includes Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure, HAProxy, Snort, Suricata, RADIUS, LDAP, and the supported VPN technologies. pfSense suits teams that want an open-source, self-hosted firewall with extensive network controls and optional support. Organizations seeking centralized management across multiple firewall vendors should consider a different category of product, since pfSense is primarily an individual firewall platform.
