Perforce P4, formerly Helix Core, is a centralized version control platform for development, design, game, VFX, semiconductor, and other teams managing source code and large digital assets. Server-hosted depots provide revision history, while Streams organize branching and workflow structure. Exclusive file locking, native binary versioning, granular permissions, and audit logs make it particularly suitable for teams whose files are difficult to merge or should be edited by one person at a time. It supports Windows, macOS, Linux, and API access.

The published plans cover several deployment and team-size needs. Free supports up to 5 users, 20 workspaces, 3 Git repositories, and self-hosted deployment with no end date. Cloud costs $39 per user per month and adds Perforce-managed hosting, teams up to 100, 64 GiB of included storage, unlimited workspaces, automatic updates, and backups. Scale supports on-premises or cloud deployment, unlimited users, unlimited workspaces, and unlimited Git repositories. Platform adds P4 DAM and P4 Plan; pricing for Scale and Platform requires a quote.

P4 also fits teams that need connections across development and creative workflows, with integrations for GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Unity, Unreal Engine, Visual Studio, Jenkins, Jira, and Slack. Proxy and edge servers support distributed teams, while Sparse Streams can help structure large repositories. The tradeoff is cost and operational scope: the paid Cloud tier is more expensive than lightweight Git-based options, and the free tier is intended for small teams. Choose P4 when file locking, binary assets, permissions, and traceability are central requirements; consider a simpler alternative when low recurring cost and a primarily distributed Git workflow matter more.
