Our verdict on Penzu
Penzu is a cloud-based diary and personal journaling service for recording thoughts, daily experiences, dreams, milestones, and other private writing. It combines a web interface with iOS and Android apps, making it suitable for people who want a simple journal available across devices. Core capabilities include unlimited entries, writing reminders, journal customization, photo attachments, password locking, encryption locking, entry tagging, search, and read-only sharing by email or public link.
The free Basic plan includes unlimited entries, mobile apps, basic journal covers and fonts, and simple writing reminders. Penzu Pro adds encryption locking, custom covers, fonts and colors, entry tagging, PDF export, writing prompts, and email-based writing through Penzu Post. Pro+ adds premium handwritten fonts, fullscreen zen-mode, versions and entry recovery, premium support, and military grade encryption locking. Pro+ Lifetime includes everything in Pro+, uses a one-time payment, requires no renewal, and includes 24-hour support. Published pricing shows a starting price of 4.99, with annual Pro and Pro+ options and a monthly Pro subscription.
Penzu’s main strength is its narrow, practical focus: private writing with customization, reminders, search, attachments, export, and controlled sharing. Its platform coverage spans web, iOS, and Android, while offline access is also listed. The service is a good fit for personal journaling when ease of access and privacy controls matter more than a wider software ecosystem. Choose an alternative if your priority is connecting journaling with external services or using a privacy model specifically defined around end-to-end encryption.
