Our verdict on PDF Chain

PDF Chain is a free, open-source desktop GUI for manipulating PDF files through PDFtk. It runs locally on Linux and is aimed at users who need practical control over PDF structure rather than document-authoring features. Its page tools cover combining selected pages from multiple documents, splitting files into individual pages, rotating pages, and shuffling page order. It also supports backgrounds, stamps, attachments, metadata, PDF forms, compression, and output permissions.

The strongest fit is PDF administration on Linux. PDF Chain can attach and extract files, set passwords and encryption, compress or uncompress documents, fill existing PDF forms, and generate FDF files. Its integration with PDFtk provides the underlying PDF toolkit, but PDFtk must be installed separately or through supported installation methods. That dependency makes setup less self-contained than an all-in-one editor, while the local Unix-like workflow suits users who prefer desktop software over browser-based processing.

PDF Chain has a narrow focus, and that focus defines its limitations. It does not provide text editing, annotations, OCR, or PDF conversion, so users working on document content, scanned-document recognition, or format changes should choose another tool. The official download page lists release 0.4.4.2 from December 17, 2015, while project activity is reported through November 27, 2022. Linux users who need page manipulation, PDF security, attachments, compression, and form filling can find a focused free option here; users seeking current content-editing or conversion capabilities should look elsewhere.
