Our verdict on pctation
pctation is an experimental PlayStation 1/PSX emulator and debugger from VelocityRa, written in C++17. It is aimed at developers, researchers, and technically minded users who need visibility into how PSX software runs rather than a polished general-purpose gaming frontend. The emulator supports Windows and Linux, uses a MIPS I CPU interpreter and software-rasterized GPU, and includes emulation for the Geometry Transform Engine, memory mapping, CD-ROM, digital controllers, timers, and DMA.
Its strongest distinction is the breadth of its debugging interface. Users can inspect RAM, CPU and GPU registers, timers, BIOS calls, and GP0 drawing commands, while the CD-ROM and PSX-EXE explorers provide additional ways to examine software. Game selection and emulation-speed metrics are also included. A BIOS is required, and disc-image support covers .iso and .bin formats. For Windows-based debugging work, this combination makes pctation more useful as an inspection tool than as a simple game launcher.
The trade-off is project maturity. The project is described as incomplete, with audio and video playback components listed as unimplemented, so it is not suited to users seeking a fully finished emulation experience. Linux support is explicitly marked untested, which makes platform confidence lower there. Choose pctation if open-source access, internal emulator components, and detailed PSX debugging windows matter most; choose another emulator if complete multimedia support, mature Linux operation, or a broader consumer feature set is the priority.
