Pathway Live Data Framework is a self-hosted stream-processing framework for real-time ETL, analytics, and AI pipelines. It is aimed at teams that want to ingest live data, transform it incrementally, and publish updates to external systems. Developers can work through Python or SQL APIs, while the same logic supports streaming and batch execution. The framework also provides a REST API endpoint for real-time features and can be deployed locally, in containers, on Kubernetes, or through managed enterprise environments.

Its strongest fit is for pipelines that need more than straightforward event forwarding. Pathway supports incremental stream and table operations, joins, temporal joins, windows, ranges, aggregations, and custom stateful reducers. Data persistence with S3 supports retained processing state, and the Rust-based streaming engine is designed for live workloads. The connector set spans Kafka, PostgreSQL, S3, Google Drive, Airbyte, BigQuery, MongoDB, MySQL, Pulsar, RabbitMQ, Slack, and Google Pub/Sub. That combination gives Python teams room to build live-data applications around existing systems without giving up SQL access.

The pricing structure has three tiers. Community is free, uses BSL 1.1, is self-hosted, and is packaged for pip, Poetry, and Docker. Scale is available free or paid with a license key and adds connectors and support features while retaining self-hosted deployment. Enterprise adds enterprise licensing, self-hosted and managed deployment, horizontal scalability, and high availability. Pathway is a strong choice for teams comfortable operating their own processing environment and needing stateful, flexible pipelines. Teams seeking a simpler hosted-first workflow or a narrowly focused stream tool may prefer an alternative.

Pathway Live Data Framework pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Python and SQL APIs with shared batch and streaming logic
    • Stateful processing, temporal joins, windows, and incremental operations
    • Connectors for Kafka, BigQuery, PostgreSQL, S3, and more
  • Where it doesn't
    • Self-hosted deployment requires infrastructure management
    • Scale features may require a license key
    • Enterprise capabilities require enterprise licensing
