PartyKit is a developer platform for adding real-time features to multiplayer applications, games, and websites. Developers write server logic in JavaScript or WebAssembly and deploy it to an edge platform, with WebSocket server and client APIs for handling connections. Its fit is clearest for solo developers and small teams building collaborative editors, whiteboards, games, or AI applications; it is less suited to teams seeking a broadly adopted, established platform.

The plan structure makes the deployment choice central. Individual is free and deploys to PartyKit’s global edge platform, supports up to 10 live projects, and clears storage every 24 hours. Commercial is also free for deployments to your own Cloudflare account, allows unlimited projects, and supports custom domains; Cloudflare usage is billed separately. This can suit a small project that wants to avoid a PartyKit plan charge, but requires accounting for Cloudflare usage and choosing where the application runs. The published plan highlights do not state a concurrent-connection allowance.

PartyKit’s client support and ecosystem are practical strengths for real-time development. The client library supports JavaScript/TypeScript, React, React Native, Node.js, and Service Workers, while connection handling includes auto-reconnect, timeout handling, and message buffering. Local development tools, deployment previews, secrets management, and logging round out the workflow. Integrations include Yjs, Automerge, Replicache, XState, tldraw, TinyBase, Vercel, Netlify, AWS, Cloudflare, and fly.io. Choose it when those real-time patterns and the Cloudflare edge model match your project; consider alternatives if broad adoption or a larger-team fit is a priority.
