Our verdict on Paper
Paper is a collaborative design tool built around a web-native HTML/CSS canvas. It is aimed at teams that want visual design, responsive layout work, design-system controls, and frontend handoff in one workflow. Its design tokens cover color, spacing, typography, and breakpoints, while breakpoint frames support responsive layouts. Teams can also import editable layers from Figma, generate and edit SVGs, and work with viewers and editors across a shared project. Paper is available on the web, Windows, macOS, Linux, and as a Chrome extension.
The free plan supports unlimited viewers and editors, 100 MCP tool calls per week, and limited image generation. Pro costs $16 per editor per month with annual billing and raises the allowance to 1M MCP tool calls per week, adds 100x more image generation per week, video export, and priority feedback. The Organizations tier includes everything in Pro plus SAML / SSO, admin controls, custom contracts, dedicated support, and priority onboarding. This structure suits teams that want to start with collaboration at no cost, then pay for higher agent and media-generation limits or organization-level administration.
Paper’s strongest fit is a cross-platform team connecting design work to AI coding agents. Its MCP server integrates with Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, Copilot, and OpenCode, while Notion, Figma, and GitHub support the surrounding workflow. Designs can provide context for agent-based frontend code export, making Paper relevant when responsive design systems and code handoff matter together. Teams seeking a tool centered primarily on automatic prompt-to-UI generation may prefer a more directly focused option; Paper is better suited to collaborative design and agent-connected implementation.
