pacsDisplay review
A focused, free toolkit for Windows-based medical-display QC and calibration.

pacsDisplay is an open-source toolkit for calibrating and evaluating medical displays used in PACS and radiology environments. It is intended for teams responsible for display quality control, DICOM conformance, and routine assessment of diagnostic monitors. The software generates DICOM grayscale lookup tables, installs LUTs through the graphics card, measures luminance response and chromaticity, and checks conformance with the DICOM Grayscale Standard Display Function. It is distributed under GPLv3 and supports Microsoft Windows 10/11.
Its strongest fit is a focused medical-display quality-control workflow rather than general-purpose color management. pacsDisplay combines display uniformity assessment, ambient-light verification, EDID-based display identification, and image-quality test patterns based on TG270 and TG18. QC data analysis and reporting extend the toolkit beyond one-time calibration, while ArgyllCMS spotread and supported USB photometers provide measurement options. The published product details identify support for photometers including X-Rite, NEC, ColorMunki, and Calibrite devices.
The trade-off is scope and platform coverage. Windows is the supported environment, so organizations seeking a macOS, Linux, or broader cross-platform calibration tool should look elsewhere. The feature set is also specialized for medical-display workflows, making it less suitable for general photography, design, or consumer-monitor calibration. Choose pacsDisplay when free, open-source DICOM calibration and QC capabilities are the priority; choose an alternative when you need a wider ecosystem, non-medical color workflows, or operating-system flexibility.
