OSV-SCALIBR review
A flexible self-hosted SCA library with broad ecosystem coverage and a local-scanning focus.

OSV-SCALIBR is an open-source Go library for software composition analysis and filesystem scanning. It is designed for teams that need to extract software inventories from hosts, containers, artifacts, or source repositories, identify known vulnerabilities, detect secrets and weak credentials, and generate software bills of materials. A standalone wrapper binary supports use outside Go applications, while custom plugins allow teams to extend extraction and detection. Its platform coverage includes Linux, Windows, and macOS, with support spanning languages such as Go, Java, JavaScript, Python, Ruby, .NET, C++, Rust, Swift, and others, plus package systems including Alpine/APK, DPKG, RPM, Homebrew, Nix, and Chocolatey.
Its standout capability is the combination of inventory extraction, vulnerability analysis, SBOM generation, and guided remediation in one library. SBOM output is available in SPDX and CycloneDX formats, and reachability analysis covers Go, Java, and Rust. The supported ecosystem list is broad for an open-source project, while custom extractor and detector plugins provide a path for specialized environments. Container image and layer analysis also extends coverage beyond source dependencies to packaged workloads.
The trade-off is operational scope. OSV-SCALIBR uses self-hosted deployment and is positioned primarily for local or host-based scanning, so teams must manage how the library or wrapper runs in their environment. It does not provide a hosted SaaS offering, integrations, or a pull-request workflow. Teams looking for a focused, extensible scanning component for hosts, containers, and SBOM workflows should consider it. Teams needing an integrated developer platform with connected workflows may prefer a broader alternative.
OSV-SCALIBR pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Scans hosts, containers, artifacts, source repositories, and filesystem contents
- Generates SPDX and CycloneDX SBOMs with vulnerability detection
- Supports plugins and reachability analysis for Go, Java, and Rust
- Where it doesn't
- Self-hosted deployment requires teams to manage the operating environment
- No hosted SaaS offering, integrations, or pull-request workflow
- Primarily local and host-based rather than a broader application platform
