Ostinato is a cross-platform packet crafter, network traffic generator, and analyzer for network engineers, QA teams, educators, vendors, and researchers. It generates customizable Layer 2 and Layer 3 traffic, supports field-level packet editing, replays PCAP files, emulates devices and selected protocols, and measures traffic rate, loss, latency, jitter, and stream statistics. Desktop applications run on Windows, macOS, and Linux, while containerized deployment, remote Drone agents, and an API support testing across physical networks, virtual labs, cloud virtual machines, GNS3, EVE-NG, Cisco Modeling Labs, and Containerlab.

The published plans show three paid tiers, all billed annually. Solo costs $12 per month for personal use and includes standard protocols, port statistics, and device emulation. Pro costs $49 per month, adds commercial use, user-defined protocols, stream statistics, and readiness for the Turbo 10G add-on. Business costs $208 per month and adds commercial use, protocol emulation, an Automation API, and RFC 2544 Perf-Bench. This structure makes Solo suitable for individual learning or personal lab work, while commercial teams need at least Pro and may need Business for protocol emulation, automation, or performance benchmarking.

Ostinato’s strongest fit is structured traffic and protocol testing rather than general network observability. Multi-stream generation, packet crafting, PCAP editing and replay, device emulation, and statistics provide a broad active-testing toolkit. Integrations with GitHub Actions, Jenkins, and GitLab connect it to delivery workflows, while the Python API supports test automation and the Drone model supports local and remote execution. Choose Ostinato when customizable traffic, lab compatibility, and benchmarking matter. Teams seeking a free entry tier or commercial use within the Solo plan should consider another option.

Ostinato pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Multi-stream traffic generation with packet crafting and PCAP replay
    • Python API, Drone agents, and CI integrations support automation
    • Business includes protocol emulation and RFC 2544 benchmarking
  • Where it doesn't
    • No free plan; pricing is paid-only
    • Solo is restricted to personal use
    • Advanced commercial features require higher-priced plans
